The Evaluation Process

Although not necessary for every case, a well-prepared immigration evaluation can greatly strengthen your application. Research indicates that applicants who submit detailed, well-documented mental health evaluations have a significantly higher chance of being granted asylum or other relief than those who do not (Atkinson et al., 2021; Behavioral Health Reimagined, 2024).

Initial Consultation

Dr. Quintana will speak with the applicant and/or attorney via phone to provide an overview of the immigration evaluation process, briefly discuss case specifics, obtain information regarding supporting documentation, answer questions and set up the clinical interview appointment. Consultation calls generally last 15-20 minutes and an email is sent to confirm.

Note: Clinical interview appointments are scheduled at least one week after the phone consultation.

Clinical Interview

Following the initial consult, Dr. Quintana will conduct a virtual clinical interview with the applicant (or family member depending on the type of immigration relief sought). This interview may include the administration of standardized mental health assessments used to identify psychological symptoms, providing essential support for the immigration case. On average, an interview can take two hours to complete depending on the type of relief sought.

Note: Interpretation services are provided upon request. Please note that clinical interviews may take longer with this service.

Final Report

Following the clinical interview, Dr. Quintana will review the applicant’s relevant documentation, such as medical records and legal documents, to support the applicant’s (or family members’) clinical narrative. She will then integrate all information to determine psychological findings relevant to the immigration case and create a written report. This a comprehensive document that presents the applicant’s personal and family history, psychological symptoms, clinical findings, and other relevant information for the immigration case. The written report is crafted to provide expert documentation of the applicant’s mental health. The report can support attorneys with immigration cases and assists decision-makers in understanding the applicant’s needs.

Note: The report normally takes between one to two weeks from the time of the clinical interview. Expedited reports are possible for an additional charge with a 1 week turnaround.

Submission and Follow-Up

The final written report is sent to the attorney, who includes it in the immigration filing. Follow-up may occur if the court requests clarification.
